Details of the Attack
On 22nd April 2025, a devastating terrorist attack occurred near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which at least 26 tourists lost their lives, and dozens more were injured. The attack took place in the Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist spot near Pahalgam, known as 'Mini Switzerland'.
According to police reports, the militants emerged from dense cedar forests around 2:30 PM and opened fire indiscriminately on a group of 40 tourists. Most of the victims were Indian nationals, with one Nepalese citizen also among the dead. Many of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
Identifying the Attackers and Official Response
The terrorist group "Kashmir Resistance" claimed responsibility for the attack, accusing the victims of being connected to Indian security agencies. However, this claim has not been independently verified.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a visit to Saudi Arabia, cut short his trip and returned to Delhi to hold a high-level security meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. Home Minister Amit Shah also visited the attack site, condemning the attack as a cowardly act.
A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been dispatched to the site for further investigation.
International Reactions
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from global leaders. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, US President Donald Trump, and other world leaders expressed shock and outrage at the killings. Pakistan has also expressed concern, while China has called the attack 'shocking'.
Local Situation
In the wake of the attack, security in the Kashmir Valley has been tightened. Jammu and Kashmir has called for a bandh (strike) on 23rd April to protest the incident. Airlines like Air India and Indigo have added extra flights from Srinagar to Delhi and Mumbai and waived cancellation fees for departing tourists.
